Saïd Taghmaoui, a Berber in America
ACTOR Originally from the Essaouira region, actor Saïd Taghmaoui is now a frontman of Moroccan, French and American films. Made in Essaouira met up with him.
Today he's one of the best known actors in Morocco and his success is paying off in the USA, Morocco and in France. Discovered by La Haine, Taghmaoui spends most of his time in Hollyworod, where he's worked on large productions including GI Joe, GI Joe 2 (coming soon), and Conan the Barbarian, among others.
But in Morocco he has his roots in the Essaouira region. "I'm a true Berber," he says, "My parents hardly speak any Arabic."
In fact, his family is originally from the countryside in the Essaouira-Agadir region. However, when he's in Morocco now, he's in Casablanca.
Just don't ask him about surfing in Morocco. Although he is a great sportsman (he started as a boxer), and he's from one the most beautiful corner of the country, he's never tested the Moroccan waves.
"It's not that I don't want to, I've just never had the opportunity. I've surfed in Hawaii, in Indonesia, I've met Moroccan surfers in Safi when I was there for three weeks to write."
Now, between two film projects, he's launching Master Class theatre in Casablanca, and plans to open a cafe. Before testing the water around Essaouira or Agadir.
"Talking about it gives me the chills. I've decided that I'm going to surf a bit in Morocco."
