Jewish Cemetery

For centuries Essaouira was home to a large Jewish community and has two Jewish cemeteries.
While the city had a cemetery with 2,400 graves, the oldest dating back to 1775, a new cemetery in front of the former was built in 1875.
Jewish tradition forbids any human representation, the first cemetery graves are anthropomorphic. According to a rumour, this cemetery has several layers of graves.
